Big Expansion Planned

From the Cariboo Observer

The Billy Barker Inn was, on Tuesday night, bought for an undisclosed sum by Fort St. James Ventures Ltd.

Mr. Ernie Arsenault, general manager of the purchasing company, announcing the takeover yesterday, said that extensions to the hotel, already envisaged by former owner, Mr. Jack Moffat, would go ahead as soon as a contractor could be found.

“Mr. Moffat had permission to go ahead with the additions to the hotel but had not put the bid out to contract,” said Mr. Arsenault.

The extensions, believed to cost in the region of $100,000, will include the building of thirty new bedrooms thereby adding an extra floor to the hotel.

“We hope to have the work completed before the start of next year’s tourist season,” said Mr. Arsenault.

Resident manager at the Billy Barker Inn will be Eugene Poirier.

Mr. Arsenault’s company already owns the Fort Hotel at Fort St. James where expansion plans are already going ahead.

Smart Hotel Draws Wide Interest

From the Cariboo Observer

A fine new addition to the business section of Quesnel, and one that will be more than welcomed by the travelling public, went into operation late last week with the opening of the Billy Barker Inn, at the corner of McLean Street and Barlow Avenue.

Designed by Lynn Fonseca for a group of Prince George business men, the new building is one of the finest of its type in the entire central interior.

Co-owners of the new hotel, which has been under construction since last fall, are Lawley Carrelli, Reno Berdusco, Fred Tasluk and Don Gillis, and the business will operate under the name of Barker Holdings Ltd. All members of the company have a background in hotel business dating back 30 years or more.

The two-storey structure has 30 guest rooms located on the upper floor, all with private bath and telephone. Most rooms are furnished with twin beds. There is an executive suite combining three rooms which offers facilities for business conferences, and a smaller room that is also suitable for such a gathering.

Wall-to-wall carpeting has been used exclusively throughout the upper floor, with the exception of the tiled bathrooms. Pastel tones have been used in the room decoration with contrasting draperies and bedspreads.

The ground floor houses a spacious lobby, lounge, beverage rooms, coffee shop and dining room. Sample rooms and a special banquet room with accommodation for 250 are located in the basement, which is completely air-conditioned to provide a maximum of ventilation.

Special facilities have been installed for the transfer of food from the ground floor kitchen to the banquet room.

In the initial opening last week, only the coffee shop and room service were in operation, but all facilities are expected to be available by next week.

As early visitors and guests called in last week workmen were still quietly moving about the building, adding a finishing touch here and there and making final furniture arrangements.

Throughout the entire construction and furnishing every endeavor was made to use BC and Canadian products. Local labor was also utilized to the fullest extent and the construction program that continued throughout the winter months did much to ease the unemployment situation here.

The building itself is an L-shaped structure erected around a steel frame with masonry walls on the north and east exposures. Outside walls on the west and south are a combination of stucco, tile and rock veneer up to the second floor level. From there up ranch-wall siding has been applied.

A natural gas hot-air system supplies heating for the building and the same duct system can be utilized for air-conditioning the entire building during the summer months. A combination of diffused and indirect lighting has been used in all public rooms on the ground floor, producing a subdued effect that dispels any hint of dimness.

Special attention was paid to the sound-proofing so that guests might be afforded the utmost privacy. Double wall construction was a feature of the upper floor finishing, and noise has been reduced to an absolute minimum throughout the entire building.

During building of the hotel Barker Holdings Ltd. acted as their own contractors, with Tom Ryan engaged as general foreman on the project.

Principals in the new project made a careful survey of the town before embarking on their new project. They are convinced that the future of Quesnel warrants the facilities they have provided, and they feel confident that the new Billy Barker Inn will prove still another attraction that will draw an increasing number of visitors to the town.

Attention to Details

From the Cariboo Observer

Quiet and exclusive is the atmosphere in the superlative dining room at the Billy Barker Inn. Muted music is wafted to the diners through the use of a tape recorder in the main office. Now open for business, the facilities of the dining room will accommodate approximately 50 with extra room for expansion if necessary. Specialty of the Inn will be steaks of all kinds and to fit all purses. Business and social luncheons and dinners will be given special attention. Hours for both the Coffee Bar and Dining Room will be from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Material-conscious decorators have provided gleaming white table cloths against a background of drapery covered wall. Each table is provided with its own pastel colored ever-burning, candle-holder, lavender, pink, pale green, blue and yellow.

The tables are laid with the best of stainless sliver and chinaware. Chef Peter Nikiforos will cater to the tastes and requests of all customers and satisfaction is assured. In the background is Myra Byman in her flamingo pink uniform awaiting the first customers.

Kroehler Furniture Is Hotel Feature

All furniture for the bedrooms and lobby of the Billy Barker Inn has been made to order by the world’s largest furniture manufacturer, Kroehler. Specially designed by this firm for commercial use, the furniture features solid eastern hardwood construction, as in their other lines of furniture.

Night tables, dressers, end tables and other articles are equipped with fiberesin tops. This amazing finish is almost indestructible, repelling all stains and marks. It’s glossy surface is particularly easy to clean and has a spic and span appearance at all times.

Hoover Vacuums Are Deemed Best

In order to protect their investment in beautiful carpeting, which is laid throughout the Billy Barker Inn, the owners have selected Hoover upright vacuum cleaners.

They consider these are the only machines with the ability to remove deeply embedded sand and grit which is so damaging to any type of carpet.

Chef Has Gleaming New Kitchen

From the Cariboo Observer

Head chef at the newly-finished Billy Barker Inn is Peter Kiniforos, who has been in Canada for the past five years. He started hi career as a chef in his native Greece and has capably filled that position at the Simon Fraser Hotel in Prince George before coming to Quesnel.

Centre of his domain is the fabulous kitchen which would delight any housewife. Every conceivable aid to modern cookery has been installed in this immaculate and shining room. With effortless ease any concoction may be whipped up because of the circular floor plan for equipment.

A tour of this meticulous cooking paradise will give you an idea of the benefits to be obtained when skilled master craftsmen design and co-ordinate the many unthought-of details enabling meals to be served with speed but still turned out to please the choosiest of gourmets.

Close to both the dining room and coffee bar is the stainless steel sandwich maker which keeps all of the varied ingredients for making sandwiches at a cool temperature. Each variety of filling is kept in its own stainless steel bin. In front of this closed container is a six-foot-long hardwood cutting board on which sandwiches of all kinds may be turned out speedily and deliciously. A through counter above gives access to the diners. The counter is heated both above and below so that the finished meal will arrive at the table hot even though the waitress may be a few minutes late with the serving.

A special soup warmer has been installed so there will be no danger of cold or cool soup being served. Next in line is the stainless steel steam table, with separate containers for roasts and an electric meat slicer.

In front of a huge walk-in freezer are meat blocks and hanging fro above hooks, which will hold the many choice meats, to facilitate cutting and storage before freezing or cooking. A slicer and many sharp knives are ready for instant use, no loss of steps being necessary. An automatic potato peeler adds to the speed of preparation.

A large stockroom holds all non-perishable items: jars of catsup, bottles of sauces, all kinds of dried foods. The pastry department is an island in itself, containing everything to make mouth-watering pies and pastries.

All in line are the gas steak broiler, double deep fryers and the range, which is equipped with a large griddle, spacious ovens and individual burners. Fascinating is the latest model of automatic dishwasher which cleans and sterilizes in minutes.

New Hotel Named Billy Barker Inn

From the Cariboo Observer

A GROUP of Prince George businessmen officially announced this week that a new hotel for Quesnel is to be constructed on the corner of McLean St. and Barlow Ave.

The new hotel will be named the “Billy Barker Inn,” after the famous miner who sparked the Cariboo gold rush in 1862 and after whom Barkerville was named.

The Billy Barker Inn will boast 30 bedrooms, all complete with bath, a cafeteria, dining room, licensed lounge, beer parlor, and a 40 by 60 foot banquet room completely equipped to handle parties and gatherings up to 250 persons. Public areas of the building will be fully air conditioned while the balance of the building will be heated by gas fired boilers serving a hot water convector system.

Licensed lounge will be named “The Quartz Room” and will be decorated in such a way as to capture the romance and atmosphere of the early gold rush days in which Billy Barker lived.

It will feature hand hewn beams, hurricane lanterns, gold pans and will show many early, unpublished photographs depicting Barkerville in its heyday.

Construction on the new hotel is expected to begin within the next few weeks with the completion date planned for April, 1961. Architect for the project is Lvnden F. Fonseca of Prince George.
